A man decides to go back to Norfolk with his daughter, to film the places he haunted from age six to sixteen, when he wasn’t at boarding school. We see the country as he rediscovers it, remarkably unchanged. The vast horizons of the Broads, Walford Lodge where he lived with his family, the beaches and the old mine fields where he used to play, older brother David, a childhood friend, Peter Cator, who has lived there all his life, and the local post-office, all blend in together to retrace his steps as a child sixty years later. We learn that the man is not English but Australian, and through letters written by his mother, Isabella Catherine Landon, to her mother, Jane Campbell, in Australia, read by David’s daughter Jane, certain aspects of life in that area in the late ‘40’s and 45’s are described, along with the pranks of the young Nicholas. Emmelene Landon follows her father with the camera. The contrast between the young character described by his mother in the letters and the calm intelligence and quiet tone of the man strolling through these places of his past is both peaceful and gripping.
